The benefits of using polybutenes in the plastics and rubber industries
KEMAT polybutenes are used as modifiers and extenders in butyl rubber which offer significant advantages in plastics, including polyethylene, polystyrene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). There are many benefits of using PIB in the plastics and rubber industries: inherent tackiness as well as chemical and oxidative stability; low permeability; excellent colour and colour stability; virtually non-toxic. Improvement in impact strength is also given to ABS, where low molecular weight polybutenes give best results. PIB can be used in thermoplastic elastomers.
In addition, polybutene is used as a plasticiser for asphalt compounds. The main use of asphalt is in road construction, where it is used as the binder which is mixed with aggregate particles to create asphalt concrete.
KEMAT offers the full range of polybutenes:
Polybut™ – low molecular weight conventional polybutenes, spanning molecular weights from 280 up to 6.000 with viscosities ranging from 2 up to 40.000 centistokes.
Polybut HR™ – low molecular weight high reactive polyisobutenes with molecular weights ranging from 1.000 up to 2.300 g/mol.
Polybol™ – medium and high molecular weight polyisobutenes with molecular weights from 30.000 up to 3.000.000 g/mol.
