In general, the market of two-stroke engine oils is stable in Europe and the US. In Asia and Africa it is increasing.
A two-stroke engine is required to operate on a one-pass, total loss basis. The oil is introduced into the engine either pre-mixed with the fuel or by direct injection using a demand pump. The oil functions as a lubricant for the crankshaft, bearings and combustion cylinder and is then consumed along with the fuel. Products of decomposition are lost through the exhaust system. Oil is therefore used continuously while the engine is in operation.
To meet environmental concerns as well as keeping the extreme high performances, POLYBUTs are used between 30% to 55% in two-stroke oil formulation.
Oils containing PIBs will decompose easily during the burning process and also have a low smoke tendency.
Higher molecular weight POLYBUT ™ has a very low level of butane-1 and can undergo a complete depolymerisation as well as provide a low level of smoke for the oil.
Very low viscous PIBs have a neutral effect on smoke but appear to contribute positively to oil deterging and low exhaust system blocking.
The OEM market is pushing and promoting the use of improved quality oil with:
- Low smoke
- Good lubricity
- Low exhaust system blocking
- Low detergent in the engine.
